The Caledones are a British tribe inhabiting northeastern Scotland, or Caledonia. They are usually identified with the Picts or Painted People in Sutcliff's fiction.

The Mark of the Horse Lord (180s CE)Edit

The Caledones are a large tribe or confederation of tribes who follow the Old Ways, consisting of primary worship of Cailleach, the Great Mother earth and moon goddess, and matrilineal descent. Their king, currently Bruide, rules by virtue of his marriage to the Royal Woman, who is the Goddess-On-Earth for her tribe.

Caledones are frequently dark in colouring, said to be interrelated with the Little Dark People, and heavily tattooed.
